Classic STi V5 ish onwards, start at about £4.5K.....quicker than an RB5 if not as nice generally on UK roads.

The STi (v5) will be of a higher specification generally, 280ps (276bhp) out of the box, the RB5 will be 215bhp or if you get a ppp'd one then 250bhp.
The WRX falls in the middle, 276bhp also but the engine internals wont be quite as strong as the STi's but still a good car to get (all based on a 99 Model year)

Definitely go for a late classic. I went for a MY98 a couple of years ago and having seen a few older models, I definitely wouldn't want one. In fact if I could have, I would have gone for a 99 or 00 model. As it is I'm very happy with my v4/MY98.
