Default vdc feature - important or not

i want to purchase outback 2.5, at and my local dealer can not provide the car with vdc unless 3.0.

can someone tell me what is the difference while driving a 2.5 with vdc vs one w/o it?

nothing until it starts to skid out of control then it will bring on the brakes cut the power sort the gears out that type of thing to try and keep you on the road
isn't it switchable on the later models anyway?
