Default V4 Block work in a V5?

edit:TITLE CHANGE: V7 block work in a V5.

I have a V5 sti R with bottom end failure.

Will it be a straightforward job fitting a V4 bottom end.

If so which head gasket size would be most suitable?

has anyone done this sucessfully?

Thanks.

Version 5 has thin steel head gaskets, Version 4 has thick Composite head gaskets. Pretty sure the volume of the piston crowns are different also.
Vers 4 and 5 Sti pistons are both Forged HF and the Vers 4 pistons sit slightly "proud" of the deck hence the thicker gaskets( and Vers 4 head vol.)
You would have to check the volume of your heads to calculate the final CR and head gasket thickness.

I must remove my Ver5 heads next and compare the pistons.

I was hoping someone had done this swap in the past

I have the heads off my sick motor, and ...

I need someone to help confirm what version bottoms ends I’m playing with.
I need to confirm that I’ve removed a ver5 bottom end, ( the car def is)
, and that the donor is a ver4..
I have head off/ TDC pics here if someone would like to look , and try and identify both bottom ends

The engine I’ve removed
the pistons have a 'square shaped recess bowl, and the piston is flush with the deck of the block at TDC. This motor used steel gaskets

The donor block; the pistons are raised across the centre, and slope down slightly each side… and have 4 small valve cuts…….. hard to explain, have pics but can’t host them.
On the donor block the piston is down the bore a slightly at TDC. This motor used composite gaskets, I know this simply because some of the material is still stuck to the block..

Other differences include there is a timing belt small roller which is on my Ver5, and not on the donor.
Also there is an extra breather barb next to where both block halves meet on the donor, but not on my Ver5.

Any info appreciated….

Sounds like your Vers.4 bottom end is a Legacy one from the description of the Pistons.

rasonline.............. email sent.
thanks

It appears that the 'ver4' (donor) Semi closed deck, I have is not a ver4,

and I'm told too that the 'ver 5' i removed, should be down the bore slighlty,at TDC, but it clearly isn't.

Picture 6 shows that the Doner Engine is a later Version 7 twin breather block hence the shape of the pistons.
If you remove a piston and the sump, you should have the later v7 bolted rods which are chamfered on the gudgeon pin end.

thanks,
so far the donor is looking like a V7

So the title should read V7 block work in a V5 ,

Interesting to see the v5 block is not as 'semi' closed deck as the v7.

Is it really a v5 block?
