If cost is a factor then go for a VF turbo, if not then personally I would go for the TD04 hybrid as it will get your desired power figure and maintain the current driveability of the car.

You'll defo need a turbo change to see 300+ bhp. Will also be worth looking at an intercooler upgrade (STi 8 TMIC is good for not much cash) and talk to Andy F once you decide on your chosen puffer about fuelling (depending on what you go for and ultimate power, might need bigger injectors or FPR).

For what it's worth (2p ), I'd say consider how you use the car very carefully before you pick your turbo and if possible get out with someone who has one of your choices fitted.

I was in the same boat and my final shortlist was TD05, TD04H & VF35.
Car had to maintain drivability (daily user) and I wanted to maximise power available with supporting mods.
Scratched the TD05. Makes really good power but it's laggy - too much for me, didn't like. While I'm aware of and can admire it's ability, as I don't do RR or track days the big figures didn't sell it either plus the torque would probably have cabbaged the clutch pretty quickly too.
TD04H is nice. Everything peeps say is true - quick spool, nice midrange, hangs on where the standard 04 runs out of puff. I liked it BUT
VF35 was the one for me. With some porting work done to headers/up-pipe it spools almost as fast as the TD04H but power/delivery wise it's simply a step above! Put another way, the hybrid made me grin, the VF35 made me swear!!
Also meant I had saved £350 over the hybrid so it was a no brainer for me.
As I said though, the VF suited how and where I drive - won't be the turbo for everyone so if you can, try before you buy. If not, ask various fans how they use their cars to get an idea of the performance in context.

Hope this helps and happy shopping

Cheers,

Stewart.

I made 319.2 Bhp and 322 Ft/lb on the following spec:

MY97 WRX

Apexi PFC
Walbro FP
Full decat 3" system
VF22 Turbo
740cc Injectors
HKS Mushroom filter
XS-Power equal length exhaust manifold

319.2Bhp @ 1.45Bar

Turbo is now an MD191 which makes 1.65Bar on the road, but failed to make peak boost on the rollers, (maybe because it mapped on the road ?) but still made 333Bhp @1.55Bar on the rollers.

MD191 soon up for sale

MY00 uk made 321/324 using a td05 16g mapped by bob rawle. 1 bar at 3200rpm and the car pulls very hard all the way. Still using 440cc injectors and oe regulator. Td05 16g, vf35, td04 hybrid are all capable of 320bhp.

Stewart

I have TD04 Hybrid, plus header & up pipe porting.

This made me swear too

On original thread though, I think you may need to either upgrade your injectors or your fuel pressure regulator.

I chose to lift fuel pressure from 3Bar to 3.5Bar and stick with my 97 standard 380cc injectors.

Not sure if you have 440cc as standard or not, think you'll get away with them if you have.

I can hang on even gain an an Evo FQ320 with a passanger in mine and not in his
