Default Bolt for pulley working itself loose!

Please help! To start with i thought the big end had gone in my 97 wrx automatic but was pleased to find out that the bolt that goes into main pulley on the front of the engine (i believe this is for the crank but may be wrong) was just loose. Once this was tighted its running smooth again but a few days later its working itself loose again and the knocking noise returns. At the weekend i took the bolt out and put some loctite on it, but today the knocking noise returned. I have been told its harder to get the bolt to tighten properley on an auto, but i need to come up with something to stop it loosening.....

Please if anyone has a solution to this , i will be very grateful!

Providing your locking the engine up manual or auto makes no difference.

I would suggest trying a new bolt with some locktite and torque it to the correct setting.

Had this problem on my 95 WRX auto and it shredded the Woodruff key. Garage thought that the pulley bolt was slightly undersize and fitted a longer one together with a new pulley and the problem never recurred.
Just a thought, perhaps the hole in your pulley has gone slightly oval from the first loosening and now runs off-centre and continuously works itself loose. Might be worth considering a new retention bolt and alloy, lightweight pulley.

Dan : As per our email , my guess would be that your keyway has gone , causing the pulley to spinn and work it's self loose. I can supply new keyway bits for a couple of quid.

Thanks chris
