ECU question???
Hi the ecu on my 93 wrx salloon is dead and i've been offered a chipped v9 ecu from a wagon to replace it? Will this work on my car ok as the wagon runs a td04 turbo etc and mine runs a td05 turbo? The person offering me the ecu and chip said it won't make any difference as the chip takes replaces the original map but i always thought that for a td04 turbo ecu it uses a different chip anyway?
The chip by the way is a scoobypro chip
Any help is good help cheers.

If the chip was mapped for the td04 turbo then it will not work properly with td05 imo.
Never heard of scoobypro though ask Scott t at PolarPerformance he might know something about the chip.

Scott t runs the link i've mentioned and has dealt with a lot of these chips also check Jolly Green Monster - ECU Mapping.
The mapping on the chip is what the customer wants and what the car had (turbo ,injectors, decat etc)

If it's the same people that are selling them on Ebay with the Scooby-doo logo then have a read of their answers to ebay'er questions.
If you know anything about the Pre96 cars/spec you will be able to tell how much the seller and his business partner know about mapping them (they will probably stop posting their answers after reading this).

Yeah it's the same people, which i just bought one of your chips now scott really do. I'm finding it hard now to claim a refund as they say I have cost them money so i can't have a full refund??? The chip cost me money more like, it somehow killed my ecu, then when i removed the chip a leg fell off it so now i have no chip and a lump of subaru metal on my drive and i'm well out of pocket! All in all a very bad experiance so far.

Did you fit the chip socket ? or is it a UK ECU wtih socket already fitted.
If so you may of killed the ECU in doing so.
It wouldn't be the first time this has happened, although most seem to be OK.
I've had 2 people recently who drilled out the solder rather then using a desolder sucking tool to heat it and remove it.
Both ended up with dead ECU
if there's any leg left on the chip you can repair it by fitting it into another socket and running solder between the broken leg and the socket.

As mentioned, recently someone else done similar ie it would not run with or without the J1 connected after fitting a socket.
This is rare and to be honest I have only had a few people damage their ECU in probably over 300 sales. Normally if it's not going to work, it still works with the J1 fitted and is down to poor solder removal and/or solder shorts.
You do get a lot of old solder floating about and the board has no conformal coating on it, so any solder could get into and under other components causing a short circuit.
