Default Is there any benifit from fitting a STI steering rack to a WRX?

Hi guys,

My car just failed it's MOT on a leaky steering rack, and so I need a new one.

Thing is, I've been told I should opt for the uprated STI version,as it would give better feedback and a more stable turn. Is this so?

Or is there no difference between the two racks? as someone else has told me both rack are the same part for each car.

If they are different, will the STI rack fit my WRX without the need for modifications?

Cheers all.

Question

I've just been told someone that although the part numbers are different the part is the same for both vehicles, Can anyone confirm this?

I have been told (and no I don't know for certain) that the STi rack has a quicker ratio so is about 2.5 turns lock to lock instead of 3, this will make the steering faster reacting and feel a bit 'meatier', not sure I would call it more stable though as it creates the opposite effect!

If it has different PN's it will be different, an extra number going to the production lines costs a manufacturer about £15K a year in admin, so its not something they do without good reason!

Both the WRX and STI (newage) use a 2.7 lock to lock (fast) rack IIRC..

The JDM spec c ra uses the 2.3 (quick rack).

The only thing I'm not sure about is if the bugeye's were the same..?

your car is a Classic, and the WRX and Sti are the same ratio.
The Sti RA had the quick rack.

The difference is marked, and the quick rack 'mod' is very nice.

i have literally just done it.

Finding one is hard, and when you do be ready for a £400 bill.

The new age rack can be fitted, but you will loose turning circle.

TBH, for a road car I would not worry too much about it all, i seriously race my Sti and the difference is a big advantage.

For a good leak-free rack call David at Welcome to the API website and tell him '911' sent you!
Graham.
