Default Second Opinion, Heeeelp !

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Guys

I'm after a second opinion, i currently own a Subaru Impreza Turbo 2000 (1999) which i bought last year. I have had no problems with it up until now.

However just last week i have started to hear a rattle from the engine when the car is reved to approx 2000rpm. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact location but it seems to come from below the front of the intercooler.

I have been told by a mechanic that it sounds like a piston has gone and it will be cheaper to replace the entire engine at a cost of around £1200 (excluding labour).

Does anyone know if this is a common fault or sounds correct. Would it be worth dragging my car into a Subaru Garage for further tests ?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as i'm new to this game.

Cheers ! Mafkees2007

It's more of a rattle noise, and it only starts when you rev it and it reaches approx 2000rpm.

Please advise on how to carry out a compression test.

Yes, check the heat sheids on the uppipe first, is a common problem for them to come loose.

If it isn't the heat shield, not sure as I would go with the £1,200 option! Sounds a bit cheap to me.
