What does this mean?????????
I am going to view a WRX this week and everything seems to be in order excellent service history, belts been changed, long mot, owned by scooby enthusiast.
One thing he said is wrong is that "syncro mesh on 5th is going"
What does this mean and is it an expensive problem to fix?
many thanks again for your help.
Dave

Means the gearbox is going and will need work. And if it's out may need to do the clutch/flywheel too depending on condition.
Budget ££££s to sort!
Cheers,
Stewart.

If it IS the mesh thats is on its way out gearing will be difficult to select. It will mean a new or recon gearbox some time in the future.
I'd still take it for a drive though. If it has been owned by someone who is clued up it may well be worth repairing, and it may well go on for a bit yet.
Have a looksy..

At least he's told you..!
It's now up to you whether you have it or not, but as said you could be looking at a gearbox rebuild anytime.
iirc you can get the original box rebuilt for <£1k (inc fitting etc), but whilst it's out the clutch may as well be done adding another £300-£400..!
After that you can start spending as much as you want, going for uprated 5 sp boxes/6 sp sti boxes, depends what you want and if the car is modded or not.. Has to be down to the sale price of the car really, but remember, there's a lot of good cars out there for silly money ATM..!

What are the symptoms that makes him think its the synchro?
If it pops out of gear every now and then, it may just be the nut on the shaft that is loose, which is a cheap repair (much cheaper than replacing a synchro!)

wouldn't worry too much mate if you can handle a spanner.
gearbox off,
new syncro will be approx £20
you don't have to split the box to do fith syncro, you just need to remove centre diff.
pm me if you would like some instruction.
