Tired Typer R?

Tired Typer R?
That's tired as in "a bit worn out", not as in the American spelling of Tyre!
Well...........I was just wondering.........if I was to buy a Type R (or similar) that was in good nick bodily, but a wee bit tired mechanically......how much should I budget for a rebuild with a view to having about 350bhp?
There are plenty of people on here who have had major engine work carried out, so I'm hoping someone can give me some idea on costs. I'm a mechanical technician by trade, so have no problems doing a lot of work myself.
I'm just thinking of options........buy a 2004 Sti, or buy an older car and have it pretty quick for something like the same total outlay.
I blame the Shootout.........all those Type R's seem so much quicker than the new age cars with similar power outputs......maybe it's an illusion?
