Question building a fast road car - cams \crank or turbo

as some may know im trying to get toghther a very fast road car

currently looking at a RCM built 2.5 with the view of pushing 500 bhp

as with anything im trying to get the most for my money and sadly i can't afford the whole RCM packages

my target is a fast road car not to bothered about the figures as drivability being number one concern (knowing im on a budget)

would I be best to stick with my current turbo RCM gt35 hybrid with p20 housing ( stock position ) which i have seen hit figures of around 480 and add aftermarket cams and billet crank

OR

stick with a sti crank , sti 5 cams and go for a twisted gt30

remembering road driveability being my target

budget stretched to the max already so can't go for both

car will be going motec ecu if it makes any difference regards maf

cheers

I would have thought your turbo would be very good on a 2.5 litre engine - similar power but circa 500lbft torque and decent spool being a 2.5. This torque figure would make it an awesome drive

i'd hope so Terry but waiting 6 months before the car can get sorted makes you start thinking and changing plans time and time again - guess that is some of the fun

cheers

is yours starting to feel laggy yet ... took me a year before mine started annoying me allthough a different beast to yours

If your not bothered by figures and the target is road driveability and budget like you say would you not consider slightly smaller / faster spooling turbo so that when you put the foot down the power is just instant ??????????? Maybe faster spooling 450ish with standard STI Cams and STI Crank which should be slightly cheaper too. Just an idea.

current setup is a std wrx running the rcm hybrid gt35 with p18 and geting 1 bar by about 3k8 - rollers have shown 386 (clinic)

I don't find it that bad if you can keep it on the boil, the car does shift but i im spending to much money not to be 100% or feel a big difference

feature creep has truely set in, but more to make the car future proof than anything else

Well quite honestly, give RCMS your budget, and see what they come up with. If you're not happy with the options, then get a second opinion, it's your money.

just what I have done Paul,

I’m waiting for the car to be worked on, but with 6 months unexpected extra saving (due to choosing RCM) I have got a few extra pennies to play with which has lead to me thinking about the bits I had to cross of my wish list

it would be easy to phone Olly but i do enjoy having a research my slef

Thanks for the advice, it is appreciated

Rich, are you committed to using RCM? I know they have a very good reputation, but very expensive also. Plus there are other specialists out there that could build what you want to a very high standard and save you a lot of money.

Have you budgeted for gearbox/ clutch/ brakes/ etc - I don't remember the current spec of your car.

I would take cams and valvetrain over the billet crank, and keep your current turbo. Turbos are easy to change, cams and valves less so.

This is something that RCM will probably be happy to build:

EJ257 shortblock
Arrow Rods
Omega pistons
RCM 14mm studs
Double valve springs
Ti retainers
Stainless inlet valves
Inconel/Nimonic exh valves
Lightly ported heads

Speak to Olly though, I don't think he steer you wrong.

Terry - Yeah Ive used RCM before after having problems with other suppliers, they are top notch and have got my trust, Ive always wanted a RCM built engine, but never realised the waiting that was involved

PPG \ exedy dual plate going in as we speak thanks to API, I ve never used API before but to get the ball rolling and as my original clutch was slipping decided to go for broke and check out what Daivd can offer - Im sure i won't be let down

Paul

that is the exact spec i have already ( should of mentioned that ) - was just wondering if I could stretch the budget any further should i go bigger turbo or upgrad cam \ crank from the current STI spec i have gone for

from what you are saying may be doing less is more in terms of what i want

thanks very much all
