Default my new 1998 sti

Hi,

I have recently bought my first sti, i have noticed that when i put my foot to the floor the "check engine" warning light flashes on the dash, any help with what could be causing this would be great.

Thanks
Dan.

Does the car have an apexi ecu? Is it a fresh import?

Sounds like the car is det'ing - use v-power if you're not already, and if you are, add octane booster until you can get thar looked at by a tuner/garage.

If it is det, you WILL ruin the engine if you continue to drive it hard.

It could happen for many reasons including det, maxing out the injectors, maxing out the air flow and these are just to name a few. Does it flash at you repeatedly or come on for a couple of seconds? As the flash indicates det, the latter indicates a fault of some kind.

Do not continue driving the car hard if you want to avoid engine killling damage. The first thing you should do is get a full tank of 99 octane unleaded in there (shell V-power or tesco 99) and as a precaution some octane booster.
DET is basically the fuel igniting before it should, so the piston still has some way to travel before its at top centre meaning your getting the start of the explosion in the cylinder before you should putting massive strain on your crank, conrods, bearings, pistons and heads. All very expensive to fix.

If you bought it in the UK contact the seller and ask them what fuel it was mapped for, you'll then need to use this fuel in it. If you imported it then get it remapped.
Untill you do this run with 99 octane + octane booster and dont floor it. You will completely wreck your engine if you do so.
