Default STi8 intercooler - remap required ?

Hhi y'all !

I've just fitted an STi8 intercooler and undertray to my 01 WRX.

The car will be remapped in a few weeks as I'm getting a new turbo etc. Do I need to drive off boost purely because of the bigger intercooler or can I drive as per normal till i get the turbo fitted ?

I didn't really touch my map after fitting the STi 8.
Besides, it was fitted more for safety then anything else.

Did you fit the bigger bonnet scoop? And i take it, you need the undertray so the air is directed correctly, is that right?

The bigger intercooler is for safety really and to get the most from it you need to fit the undertray and scoop from the STI. The STI undertray does not fit the WRX scoop.

I've still got the WRX scoop - I'm willing to lose a little of the STi Intercooler potential for the stealth look, although I do have an 02 bugeye STi undertray, which did fit the WRX scoop (the blob undertray doesn't due to the height of the metal section designed to line the bigger blob STi scoop).

By fitting the STi undertray - the air is reaching the entire STi intercooler.

Andy,
I put on an STi 8 with an STi undertray modded to fit under a blobeye WRX scoop. There's no need to drive off boost before the remap- all I noticed was that boost peak came in about 200 rpm earlier.
The modded undertray is up for sale - unfortunately as part of a package at the moment.
However, if the package doesn't sell then I'll be splitting it up into components.
With further modification, there's no reason why it won't fit a bugeye WRX scoop.
It is vital that you use the STi undertray - the WRX undertray won't direct any extra air over the STi IC and you would have wasted your money.

Cheers Nick.

I fact I already have an Sti undertray. I "bit the bullet" and just bought it new from my local dealer - I used the chassis no of an 02 STi belonging to a kindly chap off Scoobynet so I got the right undertray. Fitted it and the STi intercooler yesterday (fitting the turbo hose was tougher than it should have been due to have a jubilee clip that was too small !).

I drove it today and it seemed no better and no worse. Maybe it will help the mapper (Andy F) eek out a few more bhp when I fit the Hybrid TD04 turbo, injectors, Walbro, sportscat dp, etc etc !

OOps - tried to read things too quickly.
I'm not sure really what the STi scoops have to offer in terms of air flow. It may just be a visual thing to make the STi more obvious than the more subtle WRX scoop.
I didn't have any problems with charge temps using this mod.

Andy,

Do you have a knocklink? If not, personally, I'd keep it off boost to be safe. The new intercooler will mean more air, more air means corresponsing adjustments need to be map to the fuel and ignition settings.

Better safe than sorry!

Have a word with your mapper mate!

I ran delta dash after swapping the IC. There was no extra air flow, no higher boost but peak boost came in 200 rpm earlier. My KL showed no extra lights.

Does this all mean an Sti intercooler doesn't make much difference ?

I don't have a knocklink.

cheers,

Andy

Not on a standard WRX, but will help out with your remap and any other work after that.
