bought one of these i have red, white & black wires on my existing plug, anyone know where the corresponding wires go?

have a look at the crimps in the connector. You will probably have 2 silver crimps and one gold/bronze one.
The gold one is the signal wire
The other 2 are the heater (which can be wired either way).
