Rear Arches

Just had some work done on a rust rear-arch (
)and a dint. The car came back without the plastic strips over the arch.
the (owner) of the bodyshop (scooby specialist) had just called me to say he has no problems re-fitting them but in his opinion they just hold mud etc and can contribute to rust problems - so keep them off. I'm quite happy with his professional opinion but he said to ask around the Subaru community....so I'm asking Scoobynet.
Any thoughts?
