Sounds like coolant temp sensor.
You may find the car difficult to start if the fans are on - the ECU assumes the engine is hot, and therefore does not provide any cold enrichment if the coolant temp sensor isn't working.
Should be ok to drive (will be fine when warm) - just might be difficult to start from stone cold.
Replacement sensor from Suabru is around £30 IIRC.

the sensor is under the inlet manifold towards the back at the turbo. A right pain in the *** to get to. There is the small gauge sensor next to the bigger main coolant temp sensor so don't take out the wrong one. The right one has a brown/red coloured plug end. As dave says about £30 from subaru.
Oh and no, resetting the ecu will do nothing for this problem. Afraid it is a replacement job.

Hi Mick, reference your PM - are you saying that the engine won't event turn over when you try to start it? If all you are getting is a click, it might be an earthing problem. The earth strap attaches to the top of the engine block, near the rear on the passenger side. Check this, and make sure it's firmly attached and not corroded.
You can check the ECU fault codes by attaching two black connectors that hide under the dash. Do a search on here - the question on how to check fault codes comes up quite often!
