Cookstar read some previous posts on comparing fmic to top mounts.
Im sure 400bhp is possible yes but im sure acts and heatsoak would be high
There are various threads
ie this one https://www.scoobynet.com/general-te...c+vs+top+mount
Im sure andy forrest would recommend a fmic to an sti8 running 400bhp
Im running 400bhp Cookstar on my STI 7 and have replaced the STI intercooler for a Hyperflow as massive in comparison volume wise and far more efficient.
If i decide to go for around 450-500bhp mark will invest in a Lateral FMIC or Hyperflow monster front mount

400s fine and on that turbo youd only need about 1.5bar to do it. No problems there....
A top mount car only really suffers in stop start situations, if the cars moving most of the time then it should be fine?

My StiV3 ran (at Well Lane) 407 bhp on a 20g at 1.5 bar.
After 3 consecutive runs on the RR the power dropped off due to heat build up.
I went to a Hybrid FMIC and the car is much much better as it can tolerate far more lengthy runs at full chat (I race the car) and at 1.6 bar.
Start line heat soak does not exist.
Go straight to a FMIC, £450.

As mentioned above, a TMIC can give you the figures you want, especially if all you're interested in is a one-shot 'headline' power figure. But the power you WANT to have is what can be sustained, day in day out, under all conditions. Hit your power target with a FMIC and it's reliable, repeatable, useable power.

i ran my old old car with a 20g turbo and a sti8 tmic and it was hitting 90 on the power fc commander due to a faulty maf sensor !! i then changed the tmic to an HKS fmic all the knock dissapeared !! the maf was still faulty but the chance of blowing my engine up was gone

Cookie, Fit an air charge temp gauge and actualy see what temps your getting. If you see heat soke etc. or issues when running, then change to FMIC. Otherwise leave as is.
If your planning lots of track use, then FMIC could very well be the way to go, but make sure you pick a good one, as some FMIC will see higher charge temps than the STI TMIC.
For the sake of a cheap gauge, you can arm yourself with the right informtaion as seen in your car with your conditions.

I think the rest of the guys have cleared things up now and advised that you can run the top mount on 400bhp but it is a better more reliable option to go for the FMIC. Thanks for the even though you were being sarcastic as have been there done that running various top mounts and front mount options

Yeah your right there are a few bad ones on ebay and stuff and some cheap tube intercoolers, I had the hybrid FMIC on my old classic which was a good option from Harvey Smith but if i was doing it again i would say Lateral, APS or Hyperflow FMIC

I have just put on a splitter, temps are at least ambient or below on a run (as tested so far) and temps drop very quickly after standing.
Its for a classic to sti8 upgrade and is adjustable so the whole core gets a good airflow through it.
PS: running 1.4-1.5 bar vf28 (still holding fine)
