Right now I'de say wait.

While you can do it with something like a Garrett GT30R with 0.82 A/R exhaust housing (mapped one about 8 hours ago that made 480BHP with that turbo) it is a lot of work because it's a rotated mount so needs up pipe, down pipe, wastegate etc

As far as direct fit goes, 480BHP is just a little out of the reach of an MD321T, and the next size up direct fit (OD1711) is a lot laggier. That said, things never stand still in this game and there should be a new companion to the MD321T which will sacrifice some spool for a little bit more power... which is why I'm suggesting you wait...

Cheers,

Pat.

so am i right in thinking that even on the 2.5 sti 450bhp is about max in the standard position turbo, but to really go more i would be better with the twisted type but @ a cost for more work involved

If you used a rotated garrett then what work exactly would need to be done? Would it mean a cusomt up pipe and downpipe or just modifications to the existing up pipe/down pipe?

Realistically, you need a custom up, & down pipe, and an external waste gate.

It's not really practical to modify the standard parts.

With regard to a bolt on 480bhp/500bhp turbo, the current offerings are very laggy, compared to something such as the MD321T, and for not much more power, and generally they get less torque.

We have had 474bhp/530ftlbs on a 2.35lt from the MD321T, but 450bhp/480ftlbs is pretty common on the 2.5's.

I'm currently working on a bigger version, but I want it to be in line with the current MD range, but ultimately, spool up, & response is more important than a few more BHP.

I'll let people know when I have something I'm happy with.

Mark.

Would the MAF not be maxed out or run badley mounted near the turbo. Or are you talking about a MAFSIM conversion box ?

There are bolt on 480hp turbos and they are not laggy for the power they offer, when compared to a rotated setup.

You can't get rid of the MAF on an 06 STI as easily as you migh think, there are no aftermarket ECU solutions at present (yes, really).

Have you any experience with the AET one that does 480 or Owen Developments Owen Developments - Online Catalogue

Or Roger Clarke GT35 VF P20. I think that made 482 on that WR1. I thought they would be quite laggy though

Have a word with Mark at Owen Developments. He may have exactly the turbo you want, already proven but make it clear that you have a 2.5 litre. Avoid an external waste gate at this level as it is not needed, is an unnecessary complication and expense.
Andy or Grant at AET may also be able to give you good advice.
