newage - engine out and head gasket change
How much of a job, obvioulsly a large one, or is it?
I have never taken an engine out, but surely most of the crap stays on, I.E inlet manifold, do you need a ramp for this or can it be undertaken on a driveway.
Then the headgaskets, how hard are they to change?
Any advice guys.
Vert tempted to bin this engine and start again, but funds are tight so need to consider all options.

I've just had my head gasket done on a classic.
I've got a unit so was done in there. No ramp but was done with an engine lift and jack. I didn't think it would be a big job but took about 24 hours to do.
Most stuff stays on till you get the engine out. Manifold etc has to come off to get the heads off.
Cost depends how much you want to spend. I put clutch, ARP bolts, lightened pulleys, manifold spacers, front oil crank seal and a few other bits on too.
Cost of gaskets etc wasn't that expensive, I used steel gasket. Sent the heads to a local company, they skimmed them, pressure tested them, ported a little rough bit, fitted new valve stem oil seals and worked the valves in. This was £350 cash deal. Got the garage to do a homer for me, two boys took £500 between them to do it.
hope that helps

I was told the recommended time for the job is 10 hours. The guys who did the job are proper mechanics and have been for a number of years. This was the first subaru they'd taken the engine out of. It may be done quicker by a specialist.
