END OF THE ROAD??? Plz HELP!
On my way to work today and just after overtaking checked the rear view mirror only to see a white stream of smoke pouring from the exhaust
Also my turbo was'nt boosting.
RAC came to the rescue only to tell me it was more than likely to be the head gasket, then was towed to the local garage who also thought it was the gasket(s)
I was quoted ruffly £1000 to fix which I just cannot afford tbh
I live near cambridge so does anyone know a good specialist or anywhere much cheaper
Or is it the end

Thanks John. I also first thought it may be the turbo especialy as there was no boost, but then saw alot of moisture on the exhaust (decated) and the coolant res had a few bubbles, Also some missfire and backfires???
I will look up boreham. Is it far from cambs?
Thanks again buddy

When the head gasket gives up, is it best to just have the engine rebuilt?
I'd hate something else major to go wrong after all that time, effort and money on just the gasket.
Are there any signs of a badly worn engine etc etc when taking off the head?
What to look out for?
Any past experience
Thanks

One more thing... The temperature was fine plus no sign of overheating whatsoever.
It was running bad though i'm guessing missfire as the engine was really wobbling side to side.
Surely it would have overheated
I'll give all these places a call and see whats best.
Thanks guys.

Check the oil filler cap for any evidence of white mayo, if all is clear then try going a compression test, this will tell you if there is a problem with integrity of the combustion chamber, be it head gasket / cracked block etc..

Get a garage to do a compresion test + they can test the coolant for signs of combustion gases. If that seems fine get a 2nd hand turbo and swap it yourself, its not a hard job and wont cost much at all (they go on ebay really cheap).
If money is tight and it is the gaskets then you could atempt to change the gaskets yourself as its the labour charge that costs so much, its a fairly hard job for a novice.
Of course in the worse case it may be the engine has gone bang.
I can recomend Zen Performance as a good local.
