Default What turbo for 350bhp?

As title says! Im after 350bhp; but good driveability! I was thinking TD05 18g or VF35; but am not sure which is the best for power, and how the boost is exerted (good low down but bad top end and vica versa!)??

a td05 16g which you might already have, will need to run it @ 1.4/5 bar.

A VF35 is pretty much all played out at 350bhp from what I've heard. Perfect for 300-340 though. And I have a VF35 on my MY98 classic

18g is the better turbo but the VF35 is much cheaper and with the right supporting mods it will get you where yo want to be

Yeah, a VF35 would be the most cost effective way; ive just heard they run out of puff quite early tho/or take a while to spool up(cant remember which one of the two!)??

What sort'a price is a brand new VF35?

The engine on a MY00 RA limited is good for around 400bhp.

A VF35 has relatively early spool up, about 500 rpm later than the TD04 which is on your car at the moment.

The VF35 does'nt run out of puff, it will feel very strong in a classic and put a massive smile on your face.

Buy a low mileage 2nd hand one, mine cost £280 and came of a 21k miles 2005 STi.

Right, spot on. And am I capable of running 350bhp with the VF35 and supporting mods?

Hi,

I've got a WRX 98 import with a TD05, it's got all supporting mods and a remap (all done in japan) and when I had it power tested on Saturday it is putting out 370bhp, The maximum boost it's running on is 1.35 bar

I think that figure is rather optimistic on a standard TD05 16g to say the least, especially at only 1.35 bar. Are you sure you dont have a bigger turbo in there that you dont know about!

Its generally recognised here that the TD05 16g is capable of a max of around 350 bhp at about 1.5 bar.

That is rubbish as TD05 is only reliable to 350bhp and at 1.35 bar i dont think so

I would say 320-330BHP is easily achievable without spending too much. 350BHP would be near its max and would need things like ported headers and STi8 Intercooler and mapped to 1.5bar.

You would need to consider your gearbox, if its high on miles or had a hard life, from experience, it wont last long with 320 lbft of torque running through it!

maybe it's the 18g? I'm curious to know if it's the 16g or 18g.

Your other choice, the TD05 18g would handle 350BHP easily, but will spool up slower than the VF35, it costs quite a bit more as well.

Right-0. I was planning on gettting ported headers anyway, and have been advised on a newage WRX Intercooler (as apparently the STi ones rattle a bit and a nightmare to fit). Would 1.5 bar be too much for the engine (bearing in mind it has the forged pistons, rods, etc)?

But the gearbox is a thing I was considering, these are a weak point on the Classics arent they? What cheapish upgrade is possible if/when it goes?

Not much.

VF 35 spools slightly quicker
VF 34 has a slightly better top end

If power is your goal, VF 34 might be the better bet.

TBH with either of these turbos you'll be lucky to see a genuine 350 on a classic. Maybe if you get a decent front mount on there in addition to the other supporting mods, you'll be in with a chance, but I'd say 320-340bhp was more realistic (assuming you're using std SUL fuel)

There is no cheap option on the gearbox. You can get another 5 speed second hand at a reasonable price, but that may well go after not long too (depending on mapping and use), the saving then becomes a false economy. I'd budget for a 6 speed conversion or a PPG gearset and get it sorted once and for all: you're looking at 2k+

Have a word with David at APi.
