Default Problems if not re-mapped?

If a bigger turbo (vf30 in this case) was fitted to an engine which had only stage 1 mods (ecutek, full ninja and de-cat, panel filter, walbro) and standard turbo originally, what potential problems could it cause if it was not mapped for that turbo?

The VF30 will be able to flow much more air than the ECU will have been mapped for. It will run dangerously lean on boost causing detonation, melted pistons and more than likely big end failure.

In addition to the above (if that wasn't scary enough) you will probably experience fuel cut on boost as your ecu will be read a demand for fuelling over the ecu's safety limit.

If you already have an ecutek license then the cost of an additional remap will be relatively small.

But driving off boost should be fine until the remap - keep the ECU closed loop and you'll be ok. Also connect the wastegate directly to the turbo nipple for safety.

As I understood it, in my limited reading on the subject, replacing the turbo for one which has a higher boost rating could cause a boost spike, which I believe is termed 'over boost', taking the sensor over the ecu limit (of around 14psi I think) which will lead to fuel cut ?

I feel a correction coming on from Andrew and I appologise to the poster if I have given incorrect information

Right, so basically its mega-bad!!

Roughly, how many miles could an engine cope for with it not mapped for the bigger turbo? The scooby I have just bought has had it done, but had a full engine re-build with forged pistons and billet rods the same time the turbo was fitted. This was at 58k and its now on 74k, thing is tho, I know the previous owner (who I bought it off) who bought it just after the engine work had been done and he hasn't had any slight hickups or problems with it atall. Im just not sure if it was mapped for the bigger turbo when it was fitted. I know the Stage 1 mods were added bfore all the engine work tho. The explanation of the slight fuel cut fits, as when you put your foot down, it pulls very well; but you can feel it slightly hesitating sometimes, usually in 3rd or 4th. Also, it makes 0.5 bar of boost in 1st and 2nd; but holds about a bar in the other gears, why is this?

Sorry about the essay, im just now quite scared!

Best thing you can do is get it onto a rolling road and have the fuelling checked.

Right, and would that tell if its been mapped or not? Are there any check's I could do myself to see if any damage has already done? Or any tell-tale sign's?

When you say it's already got ecutek, do you mean a license on the ecu ? If so then it's been mapped at some point in its life. You don't need to put it on a rolling road, any mapper (rolling road or just on roads) would be able to tell you if the fuelling/boost settings are correct.

I wouldn’t worry too much you don’t mention the previous turbo that was fitted to the car? This would have some bearing on the present running it was not mapped for the current VF30.

The motor has been running for 16k without any issues with this turbo, I would take it along and have the mapped checked over or have it roiling roaded have the AFR checked and also monitor with det cans for piece of mind.

Don’t loose any sleep over it.

The rolling road wont tell you if the cars been mapped, it will tell you however if the map you have is safe on the mods carried out.

Right, well I think the original turbo which was on it was the standard TD04 unit. I have a rolling road print out which shows 248bhp, that was on the standard turbo, with just the stage 1 mods I think. Then, sometime after that, the engine was rebuilt witht he pistons, etc and the VF30, but not mapped. It seems strange that he spent all that money on the engine components and then not had it set up properly! The turbo is actually starting to smoke anyway, so im going to get one of the TD05 18g's from Andy Forrest and have it all mapped properly for that. Would it be best to take it up to Andy Forrest to have it mapped? Or could I go to someone like Andy at ScoobyTeknix or Steve Simpson at TEg Sport, who are both much closer to me, and get the same results from the turbo??
