Default Can engine mounts be changed with engine in?

Hi all, great website! Could anyone please tell me if the engine mounts can be changed with the engine in? Its a EJ20 motor in a 1996 Legacy Twin Turbo.

Ive had a look and there is no access to the rear bolts on the mounts as they are obstructed by the sub-frame. It appears the only way to replace them is to a: take engine out or b: drop subframe. Ive tried to jack the engine up as far as I dare but its still impossible to get at the rear bolts.

Any help greatly recieved.

Thanks, Kieran

Yes it can be done but it is very hard (I've done it.)

BUT:

I remember out of frustration i took the exhaust manifold off to do it all.
Check the points below before you remove the manifold!
Oddly they came out easy but getting the new ones back in was horrendous.

I jacked the engine high as possible and I took the airfilter/MAF off the inlet as it was straining too much That gave a big increase to the height.
I trust you have slackened the fore/aft stabiliser off the gearbox/bulkhead located under the TMIC!? That will fight you all the way if kept tight.

Hope this helps you.

Grham

Default l....

cheers for reply. I hadnt thought about the bar on the top. How did you get round reaching the bolts that sit behind the sub-frame? You must have managed to get the engine up quite high?

The only other fear I have is that with mine being twin turbo that the exhaust manifolds are slighty diffrent. If I managed to get at the rear bolts, i was worried abut the ap to put mounts in through.

I will have another look tomorrow.

Thanks again , Kieran
