Angry Whining sound

i have an MY98 Uk Turbo, and when driving in any gear and coming off the throttle, i experience a whining sound, only apparent when in motion,when stationary depress accelerator and let go the noise is not there, took it to my local garage and they said it is probably a bearing, i thought the noise sounded as if it were at the front of the car,but garage said from the rear, they said the noise would need to get worse for them to properly locate where it was coming from, any sugestions ?

Has it always done this..?

Only asking as if it's your first scoob it could be transmission whine, which is normal (4wd tranny & diffs).

This is the same sound you'd get from a FWD car when you reverse quickly and take your foot off gas..

Hello, Some questions;
Does it do it when coasting along in neutral or only in gear?
If so In any particular gear?
What speeds does it do it? all speeds or a set speed?
does it vary with speed?
Does it vary when you weave the car from side to side (in a safe place of course) as the load will be applied to different wheels as you do it.
Have you checked the gearbox and diff oil /levels?

Does it do it when you have booted it and coming off throttle? Or all through the rev range?

I had a similar noise. Took it to 3 different garages. They all said rear diff. was making noise. Changed rear diff 3 times (dont ask) but still noisy.
Turns out it was just a wheel bearing. Nothing else indicated this, ie no play or change in noise when going round corners.
Changed the bearing - noise gone.
