New age intercooler undertray

New age intercooler undertray
Is there any difference in the STI intercooler undertrays fitted to the bug eye and the blob eye. Also does the STI undertray bolt straight onto the blob eye WRX bonnet.

The blobeye STi tray is much taller to fit under the OTT scoop.
Likewise, it won;t fit under the WRX scoop.
It can be modded by removing the side panels and adding shorter ones to reduce the tray height.
Std STi blobeye tray:
The above tray tweaked to fit the blobeye WRX scoop:
In trying to solve this problem, I found that the bugeye STi scoop is about the same height as the blobeye WRX scoop - it may be worth while finding the earlier STi tray and try to fit it without any mods.

LOL
There are three vertical plates on the splitter that need removing. They are tack welded in place so these came away by wiggling a thin screw driver under the welds. The plates can be put back if needed.
I bought a square of 0.5mm st. steel plate from my hardware store and cut it up with tin cutters.
It took about 6 trials to get the shapes right.
The three new plates were stuck in place with Araldite. Stick on alu flashing was added to smooth the upper joins of the splitter entrance - it hides a multitude of sins under it!
The splitter has been place for 3 years without any problems at all.

Ahhh, Araldite - great stuff. Used it to glue the soles back on my DM boots last night - they'd suffered after veing in a rucksack from time to time during my world tour !
Cheers Butty, didn't realise you couldn't simply stick an STi undertray in a WRX.
Thanks again.

Thanks for the help it is really appreciated. Is the STI intercooler on the bug eye the same as the blob eye one and is the STI intercooler both longer and wider than the WRX item. Looking at your undertray it looks to me as if it is just wider as the undertray still has the grill part to the left of scoop cut out area. By varying the angle of the air flow vanes on the undertray to fit the WRX scoop does it still give the correct airflow onto all areas of the intercooler. Have you been able to compare the bug eye undertray to the blob eye one?
cheers

Arch,
Yup the UK bug and blobeye STi intercoolers are the same.
The STi IC
The flat tray size is exactly the size, whether WRX/STi or bugeye/blobeye.
The difference on the STi is that the scoop opening is wider. This eats mainly into the space towards the grill part that allows the turbo to be cooled.
The opening also take sup more space to the back & front of the tray over the WRX item.
The tray scoop opening angle changes from WRX to STi and blob to bug eye:
Smallest angle - bugeye WRX (looks similar design as Classic tray).
Mid size - bugeye STi & blobeye WRX (I reckon that they are the same scoop area).
Widest angle of opening - blobeye STi (enormous and I'm not sure that it is of any real benefit).
I've been as careful as possible with my modded tray, so all the STi IC core is exposed to the entire airflow.
I have a charge temp gauge installed and have not had a charge tmep above 45 deg C in 12 months of measurement. Normal temps are 1-2 deg above ambient temp. The only issue is temp in standing traffic, so i don't do any grand prix starts in the summer.

Fantastic info a big help I think I have already sourced a blobeye tray from another SN member so will also try and source a bug eye one and use which ever fits best with the least mods. I assume both undertrays have a rubber sealing gasket to seal as much air into the intercooler same as the WRX? You wouldnt happen to know the part number of the bug eye undertray.
cheers

Thanks for that its a big help. Never ceases to amaze me the info people have on here and how willing they are to share it. Spoke to a chap at the scottish motor sports show today who seemed to think that zerosports do an undertray that allows the WRX scoop to be used with the larger STI intercooler. Anyone else heard of this or have any contact info for a UK or scottish based zerosports supplier.
Also if anyone has tried a bugeye undertray in an STI 8 scoop it would be a great help if they could pass on the info I bet this would be a great help to many blob eye WRX owners wanting the bigger intercooler but without the bigger scoop.
Phoned a local dealer yesterday trying to get a part number for a bug eye undertray but would not help at all without a chasis number

I borrowed a Zerosport bug STi tray and found it fitted under my blob WRX scoop.
I thought the Zerosport item was not particulary well tailored to make use of the scoop size and it is built to fit a tank - it must weigh 5 times more than a std tray and costs a fortune as well. Not my idea of value for money.
