Porting headers advice
Mornin.
I've been reading some of the previous posts regarding headfer porting and have a couple of questions.
Firstly, what exactly is the aim of porting? Am I right in saying that essentially you are tyring to achieve the smoothest flow of gases through the headers?
Secondly, is it as 'straight forward' as taking off the OE headres and simply die grinding back the lips, bumps and weld lines?
Thirdly, is it worth doing to the stock headers? Or is it more prudent to upgrade to stainless steel?
Thanks for the advice in advance!!

I think during the process of porting your also trying to align head diameters, header collector and cross pipe better as well.
How much cash have you got to spend?
Again I think some people have had good increases but not just by porting the OE headers. The uppipe is usually upgraded at the same time and heat wrap is used instead of the OE heat shields.
This is the limit of my knowledge on this subject.

The head and manifolds are mismatched. What you are doing is removing the the lip(as shown in pics) and at the same time improving gas flow/speed which in turn improves turbo spool up which brings the boost in lower down the rev range.
I would not bother with the after market type headers unless you are after big power. And not the cheap cr@p on fleebay.
Its dead easy to do, remove and strip the headers then port out to the gasket mark and as far down as pos. Only port in the direction of flow.
You will need an air grinder and HSS cutter. Do a search there are plenty of threads on this topic.

Grind off all the lugs and heat wrap as well. It's worth getting an uppipe as well but be carful as to big a pipe dia and you will lose exhaust gas speed. Do a search for Harvey Smith, he supplies good uppipes, thats who I got mine off, comes heat wrapped as well.
