Worth checking the header tank on top of the engine for level too...??

i always check that one first before the one in front of the battery.

That's correct. You need to check the header (expansion) tank (top, left centre of the engine) to make sure that is full. If you are running dry, or low, that is where it'll show & need to be topped up.

cheers for this fella. panic over!! it is indeed an overflow type reservoir. i took it to the garage and the header tank was full to brim so not a problem, they put a little water in the anyway to top it up. (its a diluted solution anyway apparently so a little extra water is fine so i was told)

I remember my first car a rover 214sli twin cam , i never knew anything then and just kept topping it up with water.eventually my hoses corroded and caused my cambelt to snap somehow according to the guy who rebuilt my engine so not too much water in there

Halfords and the like sell proper coolant. Far better than just sticking in some water.
