Size of oil filter - reasons for change
Can anyone remember the reasons for the reduction in size of the oil filter for Subarus (about 3 years ago?) Was it just a cost reduction exercise or was there any other reason? Replacement items from Purolator for instance, are still the old, larger size.

Here's my ramblings on the subject. What has happened in the past is that as technology advances the filtration methods get better and they need less space to to the same job and with increased flow, this obviously ties in nicely with using less material and in theory costing less to make. They've also probably made a generic one that fits a larger group of engines and as the filters can only be made to the minimum diameter of the sealing gasket I guess they thought why have the extra chunky one when its not necessary. You might even find that they are produced by a third party who's toolset has been changed to save money in the long term. Oil filters have been far more advanced than they need to be for quite a while and can last a lot longer than the manufacturers let on ... The Japanese bods who do the designing for Toyota reliably informed me that an oil filter was good for 60,000 milesrather than the 6,000 that we normally change them at. All the above may of course be total rubbish but I'm sure the big ones in question are fine for what the engine actually requires.
