Question 85 or 86 GL Sedan running real rough

Hi hope someone here can help. I have a late model 1985 (but vin numbers say its a 1986) Subaru GL Sedan 5 speed 1800, the problem is that it has black exhaust and runs rough when the rpm's is under 4000. If we keep the rpm's over 4000 the car shifts fine and runs great with out stalling or sputtering. Under the 4000 rpm's and shifting it will stall out. We have just bought the inlet o2 sensor but cant find it under the car. We put new plugs and wires. Having a hard time finding dist.cap and button for it. Also changed the alternator before we changed it the ecs light came on, now that the alternator has been changed no more ecs light. Hope some one can help. My husband and I love our Subaru's here in Maine they drive like little tanks.
