Asking for trouble on an 00 car. 98-00 had very delicate hotwire MAF sensors that were frequently killed by the vibrations from I/K's or the oil from aftermarket filters and cones. If the MAF goes and you don't spot it (uneven idle and flat spot at 4k revs) then lean running can cause fatal engine damage.

Also, I/K's don't usually give much, if any performance benefit in a Scoob.

A new MAF sensor should be IRO 90 quid and is an easy DIY. The dealer may try and fob you into buying the MAF sensor AND housing for 200+ though

Get it sorted ASAP, and if you are in any doubt, take it somewhere with suitable diagnostic capabilities to check it out.

yeh good idea mate, i got a MY00 classic and got a pipercross induction kit and am on my 2nd MAF in one year. they last about 6 months max with an induction kit on a 98-00. Altho the induction kit does make a difference its at the expense of MAFs. Hope this helps.

If you don't spot the failing MAF it may be at the expense of an engine too. Expect a bill of £2k+ in the event.

I once ate some fish that was past its sell-by date and I wasn't ill, so now I plan to leave all my fish to go well past its date as it obviously isn't a problem

I/K's and MAF problems are frequent and well documented on here. Everyone is free to take the chance, but just because one person hasn't had any problems doesn't mean everyone will be safe, especially on 98-00 cars. Also, justify the expense and potential problems with proven gains from before/after RR graphs. They usually get little extra ! A bit like VTA DV's, bought for the bling, show-off, silly noise factor than any performance benefit.

Apart from the symptoms mentioned, would checking the ecu error codes also tell you if the MAF sensor was knackered? I've just checked and it says there are no errors. I've got an HKS power flow induction kit on my '00. The induction kit has been on for the year I've had it and god knows how long before that. The previous owner didn't come across as the sort of person that would have fitted it himself....

How big is the symptomatic flatspot? I have some slight hesitancy on part throttle at a couple of different points, but you'd have to be paying a lot of attention to notice.

Just for the aid of people searching, I've just ordered a new filter for my HKS induction kit from Rampage on 01285 647840.

An ECU reset or diagnostic check would highlight a failing MAF but without, the symptoms mentioned (errant idle and/or flat spot at 4k revs) are the only clue before DET causes meltdown. Some get away with it, some don't. You takes your chances.
