Swapping intercooler, help techies please
My my94 wagon currently has an old tmic on it, you know the one that sits on an angle as you look at it from the front? Anyway i now have an tmic from a MY98 wrx which is the standard one for that age car which is a better unit than the older one , its the one that is squarer and larger and must be more efficient. Can anyone tell me if it is an ordeal to do the swap or not?, or anything i should look out for? i have got the mount with it that fit my car but no piping, (apart from the y pipe underneath), is it hassle fitting a new dump valve with recirc? or should i just get a VTA? anyway any help or a simple guide would be greatly appreciated thankyou.

Dont forget to change the air flow panel under the bonet so that it directs the air better
I'd leave the D/V for what it's worth, but run a good quality Vta if you must.
may need the mounts, but cant forsee any major problems

It's not a straight swap over to change the intercoolers, but this thread will help.

I did mine a couple of months back, put an STi 4 onto an MY 94 WRX ra.
I would add, an STi intercooler would be better and more worthwhile to do than putting a WRX one on. You will need the Samco TCS22 hose kit.
Trim back the intercooler rather than the manifold, and rather than attck the rear engine mount with a big hammer, carefully trim it with a grinder.

To be honest the pipe you got their is not going to help, the intercooler may be bigger but the pipe is restrictive so you may not gain much

hi kips, i know the dumpvalve outlet will foul on the idle valve, i will plate that up, i have seen a samco hose made for the ic inlet with dv pipe on it, (part no. SH004), this will help a lot, but if you think there is no point in doing this swap i dont want to go to the hassle of all the work. How about if i replace the restrictive inlet pipes with the allloy sti type piping, that must be better?
something like this one?
this looks less restrictive.
What do you think?, i am not going for big power, around 300 bhp, but to me the original slanty ic just looks like it is not very good.

The pipe shown will help the flow I'm not saying its not worth the hassle it just seemed to much hassle for me to get dv welded up so going front mount agree the inter cooler is better than the slanty one if you do a search youl find loads of info on conversions

For the power i am looking for i would rather not fit a front mount, i have been offered an sti 2 slanty ic, would this give any advantage to the flow rate or inlet temps compared to my original slanty ic? I noticed it has only one inlet to the ic but my older slanty wrx type one has two inlets into the ic, can anyone explain this?
this is the sti 2 slanty type.

All 'slanty' intercoolers had only one inlet pipe AFAIK.. the later version cars after 97 / version 3 STi's had 'square on' intercoolers with two inlet pipe for better air distribution within the intercooler before it passed to the throttle body.
You'd be better off buying my newage intercooler with twin inlet pipes - alloy Y pipe and the dumpvalve already removed and the hole plated over!! then you can keep your existing inlet pipe (which should have the dump valve fitted to it) and jubilee clip it straight to your turbo - two new support brackets and jobs a gud 'un
Had planned to fit it to my rally car before I stupidly sold it
Cheers
