SSM cable for MY98
Trying to help someone out who has a MY98 Forester with an OBD-II connector BUT it is not OBD-II compliant. It is only SSM and appears to be wired with pins 12 & 13 as determined as Subaru specific for these years....
Now, there are a lot of tech diagrams saying how to make a cable up, but can you buy one of these cables off the shelf.
Obviously the Elmscan is only OBD-II and the Tactrix is OBD-II/SSM, but the latter the SSM pins are not 12 & 13, so for his year a specific cable is needed...
If anyone thinks you can change pin outs to get it to work on an Elmscan, it would be most interesting, but I do not believe this will work.
Any ideas?
Mark

The MY98 ecu is not OBD compliant so you can't scan it using OBD tools.
There is some info on the subject here: Subaru ECU Monitor

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for that....I did find this yesterday after a bit of a search on here. There are a few SSM tools out there, JDash, VWRX SSM and others....
He just needs a cable.

Test help wanted.
Hi
I am looking for someone near me (preferably) with a Tactrix cable (or similar) and a Subaru!
I have written some firmware to access the SSM protocol from the OBDKey device which I have developed. I have tested the SSM protocol back to back with another emulated controller and this works, but I haven't tested on a Subaru yet. I have the interface electronics (K and L line / ISO 9141 and KWP2000) tested so there is no risk to the owner of interface electronics damage (I'll underwrite any testing anyway).
Is there anyone near me (north London/ Herts/Beds/Bucks) who would be happy to help?
I'll reward them with an OBDKey unit which supports all OBD-II protocols PLUS SSM once it's fully tested and working on a Subaru.
It would be important that you have a Tactrix cable (or similar) in case we need to compare operations.
Thanks
Sinclair
