Unhappy Trouble removing tight idle control valve screws..!!!

I think I need to clean idle control valve as I've been getting occasional drop in RPM, almost dies, at tick over and a couple of times starting has taken two attempts (fires and but RPM dies). However, getting the thing off 'should' be easy but the screw heads are starting to strip, being bloody soft ****e and tight as ****..! (why couldn't they have used hex heads..? ).

BTW I've used decent screwdrivers of the right size/type..

Any suggestions please..

Take the right size driver again and place in screw head, give it a sharp tap or 3 with a light hammer to 'shock' the thread.
Sometime this will loosen the fastener.

Mine were dead tight too, but this old trick worked.

Thanks Graham, forgot about this old trick..

I'll give it a try once it stops raining..!

What I'm afraid of is completely stripping heads..

A note of caution - make sure the gasket under that cover is replaced properly and not pinched.
If damaged then coolant can be sucked into the inlet manifold at idle.

The drop in coolant level can be amazing - as I found out last year.

Oh yeah, I got the screws out with a little 1/4" socket set that came with some screw bits.

I've got some 'Screw Grab' that I used recently for this. No Philips head would do it until I got the 'Screw Grab' liquid on the case, then they came straight off. It's basically thick liquid with grit in it. You put it in the head of the screw then jam your screwdriver in and bob's your uncle. Works really well on partially rounded cross head screws.

Hi,

I had used pair of long nosed mole grips, loosening them was a doddle.... However i did have the intercooler off so testing required a refit... Helpful if you have a digi multimeter to check the voltages
