That is an air temperature sensor from an STi 3 or some other blue, Sti. Classic.
It fits into the plastic duct that fits above the headlight and leads air into the inner wing snorkle.
If you have a photo of that area of your engine bay it will be possible to make further comment.

There is a hole in the plastic duct and the sensor is held in position by a rubber gromey.

Looking at your photo again, I think the air duct is not on your car. It is normally held in position by a set screw that fits into the hole on the cross pannel visible in your photo.
The air duct is important if you are retaining the O/E air box.

No, do you have the standard airbox? if not, it needs to be in the area closest to the filter.

If you do, do you have a cold feed pipe leading out of the airbox to somewhere else? it needs to be in that pipe.

do you have a plastic pipe coming out of the inner wing? you do, then there needs to be a pipe coming from the airbox which this slots in to and comes above the headlight.and as harvey said, bolts on to the top of the front panel I can take a picture if needed, but this is not the pipe that you need on ebay

HTH

The piece that you need is a flat duct that curves through almost 90 deg taking air from the front headlight are into the inner wing where there should be a resonator box.
If you e-mail me I will send a photograph of it and I may well have one in my garage.
If the car is running the standard air box then it is best that you have this duct in place, along with the inner wing resonator box as originally intended by Subaru.
