UK 98 Power Increase Options
Hi,
I have an Jan 98 Turbo which unfortunately can't be remapped (so i'm told) without putting in a new ecu, like the Power FC etc.
The car has a full decat revolution system and panel filter which are all the engine mods so far. Unforutnately i cant afford to spend 750 getting a new ecu fitted and mapped so was wondering what other options i could go for?
I.e. could i get an Apexi AVCR and increase the boost a little? It peaks at 1.2/1.3 bar and normally settles on 1.0 to 1.1. What would be safe without melting it?
Also would the standard knock sensor and ecu cope with any knocking if i were to do this?
Cheers guys

No takers?
Was also reading before that the AVCR comes with a 3 port solenoid and my car has 2 port one. Where would i plumb in the 3rd if i went down that road?
That is of course if thats the best road to go down.....

how about a geometry set up? Also I can't recommend a rear ARB enough! If you wanna start with electronics then a mate of mine is selling a brand new boxed AVCR. Personally, I don't know enough about boost controllers and don't think they are particularly safe..... You could try a secondhand ECU? I hear the Z4 ECU mentioned a lot although whether it is compatible is another question.

thanks guys.
I was looking into getting a det alarm or similar if i went that way. When i boot it my A/F guage is always almost full rich but that doesn't guarantee no dets. If i put a det alarm on would i need to replace/add a new knock sensor? I've seen some posts that say you need a bosch one so as not to throw a CEL?
Had my geometry done recently but need's done again due to fitting brembos as the wheel spacing has changed slightly on the front. I assume this is the problem as its started tramlining badly since the brakes went on...
Just don't know what to do for the best, without spending silly money!! My TPS has just gone too, doh!

Just noticed some posts about the scoobyecu plug in for the ecu. Is there a similar thing that would fit in mine or is there just nothing you can do with these at all? I think my ecu is of the 3 loom type but i'd have to double check.
Edit: What about a PPP ecu or P1 Ecu from the same year? It does have 3 plugs...

Hello mate.
If your car is an MY98 then you can use only ECU's designed for MY97/98 cars. The Power FC is a good option for you. This is what I use.
The P1 ECU is from the later cars and does not fit, neither does the scoobyecu which is for the 92-96 cars.
Speak to AndyF or Simon about a Power FC

Hi,
Thanks, had looked at the power fc but cant afford it. What with boilers breaking down etc. Not sure whether i can bring myself to paying that kind of money when other parts of the car are starting to fall off...
Also have just forked out 400 for brembos up front (mega pleased with those). Was just looking to see if there are other options out there...

You'd be far better off saving for a PFC , £389 delivered (inc commander) via Negun. Install yourself and get Andy F, etc. to map. Much better than paying £1500 on a re-build. - even on standard boost cyl. 3 can overheat!

Hi,
If i bought one are they just a case of plug and play? What is the standard map like on the powerfc? As in, can i install it and use the car until i get a chance to have it mapped? Will see what happens with my TPS and if i need to purchase anything else.
Cheers

the base map is too advanced and too rich.. and also developed for the STi engine.. which has different MAF, Turbo, Cams, Valves, Pistons etc etc..
The MAF housing is 10mm smaller and therefore the MAF voltages seen between the UK 97~98 specifically and the 97~98 STi is very different.
