Default Re: Next Stage for Trackday Car

Hi,

Just wanted to get some opinions as to the next stage :

Currently run a V3 Type R 2.5 - 10k no problems. All supporting mods. Plus Tein Coilovers, uprated suspension parts, AP4 pots and Mocal Oil Cooler, 350 x 350.

Would like to convert the car into a trackday vehicle.

What course of action would be most benefical :

1. Install of rollcage with removal of rear seat
2. As above plus change front seats for lighter ones to keep overall weight gain as low as possible
3. More Power (VF34 to 20g or garrett of some sort) - limitation is gearbox at maximum gain being 400 x 370.

Would i really benefit from more power or could it be added after rollcage ?

Opinions / experience would be much appreciated

Thanks All

I'm no expert, but, I'd go for the roll cage and seats. Also strip everything out that in not necessary, eg door cards, carpet, trim, spoiler. You could even take the dash out as I bet that weighs a bit! Replace it with a console to mount the necessary gauges.

Hope this helps!

IMHO:

If you are driving to/from the tracks beware of stripping too much?
Rollcage is essential, minimum of 6 point.
Remember to add padding where your helmet might impact on the cage.

Racing driver's seat mounted as low as you can go!
Sitting 50mm deeper into the car will change your whole attitude believe me.

You will loose your sun visors with all this so a black and deep stick-on will be needed touring car style.

I have found a white gear **** good (!) as you can see in your side vision where the gear stick is as you are thrashing around!

A small CO2 fire extinguisher mounted where you can reach it when strapped-in, then, a GOOD quality min 4 point racing seat belt set with 3'' wide straps over the shoulders and lap. The stock Impreza mountings can be used so no drilling of the shell.

Lastly, the best helmet you can afford that is very very comfortable to wear for a long time.
You will be sweating (won't you or will you drive like a girlie? ) and the wrong helmet will really irritate you.

I would leave the cards on the doors, as without them there are a lot of sharp edges in the door shells to gash yourself in an impact.

Remember to remove the spare tyre and jack!

Happy track days!

Thanks 911 (Graham) for the info.

Would you say it is safer to keep the car at the BHP/ Torque it is or go fo the extra 50 BHP/ 25 Ft Torque with new turbo

Can a 6 point be put in place retaining rear seats ?
Is it worth taking out Aircon ? much of a weight saving

In terms of seating - what works best uprated sports seat ala
Corbeau Carrera or full on buckets ?

cheers

You say you want a trackday car. To me that means a great chassis first, and power second when the car can take it.
You can keep the rear seat if you order the cage with a removable rear diagonal (just 2 big bolts to remove it.)

Choose a good seat that fits your ***!

There are 2 different widths, normal and 'fat guy' ones.
I have a Sparco bucket, very comfortable and you will soon love it over the lardy stock seat.
Avoid stark colours as the police will not be impressed if you are stopped on the road. It all looks poser anyway if in chrome yellow!

Go to visit Demon Tweeks in north Wales as they have all the stuff out so you can try it all. So important.
Ask for Dave Kimberly as he is a hillclimber and knows Impreza's too.

I took my A/C out and saved 5 Kg, but wished I hadn't this year....Cost me £25 to de-gas it too.
