Default HKS SSQV

I was unsure wether to post about this, as my flame suit is at the dry cleaners today

Basically I got a HKS SSQV through the post last night for my 05 Impreza. First of all I'm not even sure if i like "the noise", made me wet when I was 18 in the R5GTT but not sure these days

Anyway, the car doesn't seem to perform (power-wise) as well anymore, doesn't feel "smooth" when changing gear, revs drop to a point where I think it's going to cut out when I come to a stop and my fuel consumption is now on par with a Bugatti Veyron

I know most people slate them because of the sound, but are they basically just crap anyway? The car was beastly with the standard recirc and now, well.....its not

Depending on what model SSQV you have there may be an adjuster, usually if there's any leaking it will be obvious on tickover and will cause uneven idle and the revs to drop off. First thing make sure there are no leaks on the pipes, then adjust or just swap it back to recirc, like i'm about to do with my SSQV lol.

You are suffering typical behaviour, take it off, go back to the std one which is far superiour in operating terms.

I feel like a total *** tho, spend a mini fortune on the genuine brand new bloody thing thinkin it would be great, "you get what you pay for" and all, but it seems you dont. I do now agree that the standard recirc is definately better and the car definately felt a hell of a lot more responsive.

Oh, and the sound is already 'very' embarassing, i can't wait to get shot to be honest

Does anyone have an idea on resale value of a 'day old 2002+ Impreza HKS SSQV BOV'?

Just before you swap back make sure that when you swapped to SSQV you correctly fitted the bung in the larger pipe which fits onto the bottom of the standard dump valve. With the standard dump valve this reroutes air back to the MAF (instead of 'to atmosphere' with the SSQV - which is what the whooosh is). If this isnt correctly bunged then it will draw extra air in all the time and bugger up the fuelling mixture.

Also, this larger pipe it is b1tch to get back onto the standard BOV, so when you've done yours let me know what you used to hold the metal sprung clip open, how you managed to get enough hold on the pipe to slip the BOV into it or just come and do mine lol. I was almost at the stage of removing the intercooler just to get some room to get my hand in to hold the pipe - then it started raining so the SSQV went back on lol.

Have fun

Will let you know, yeah. Do you want me to take action pics as I go along?

To be honest I don't really care if it's fitted correctly or not now, I just feel like a total tool with this bloody whistle all the time

Well I know what to do, just cant my bloody hands in to do it lol. Action pics may be useful to someone else thinking of swapping dump valves on a newage - its a very common question. So if you've got the patience and 3 arms then go for it.

It shouldnt whistle all the time ! - just when backing off from full boost.

If its working and only venting on boost then stop driving like a hooligan on full boost all the time then, a man of your age should know better lol

My 5yr old could get her hands in too - its just what else she would remove whilst she was in there - very inquisitive into how things work, which ironically causes most things not to work after she's investigated lol

So, why are you returning back to the recirc?

Several things.

I'm sure it's dropped some power after fitting it. Not sure if it's leaking under boost, also seems to have developed a slight stutter when comming onto boost in 3/4th so stick the recirc back on, as most ppl seem to on newage, and see if that makes a difference.

'Stealing' measured air off the MAF causing rich mixture every time the DV vents cant be that good for the standard cat downpipe I have at the moment, and certainly not for the high flow cat downpipe I'm about to fit (and possibly the lamda ??).

I guess I've just got the 'loud' thing outa my system now, replaced the Jap back box which was on it when I bought it for a scoobysport too.

I also respect Bob Rawle's opinion, he seems to know a thing or two about these here flat four engines.

The CEL (Check Engine light) ? Definately not right as far as I know.

Get someone to check the fault codes reported by the ECU. You can do an ECU fault code check and reset yourself if you really want. Do a search on here or ask, but make sure the instructions you are given are for a 05. Also make sure that when doing an ECU reset no immobiliser/alarm problems will result... I shouldnt imagine so, but dont know for sure.
