is the car dead?
went out in car yesterday and was travelling along the m54 when we began to lose power and boost. the car started shaking, a loud clanging noise could be heard coming from exhaust as well as big clouds of black smoke. came off motorway, checked engine, which was really shaking, checked oil and it read nil. bought some put it in and then limped home. can't rev it in high or low, but seems fine in mid revs. if we use the turbo, the car starts shuddering and won't pull.
then to finish the day off, when we got back the car began to start pouring out loads of oil from under then engine.
can anyone help, or know what the hell has happened?

Doesn't sound like a small problem does it
if the oil you put in, poured out straight away you've been running with no oil - pretty terminal for most engines.
Complete engine / turbo rebuild needed.
Sorry
Simptoms may suggest only turbo is knackered, but unfortunately I doubt it. Any mechanic will diagnose this, but don't use any mechanic to fix it. Scoob specialists quicker, cheaper and better.

In any case if I were you I woudn't even dare to start up the engine any more and I'd have it toved to the nearest subaru(or other) garage.

we managed to run another 30 miles on the oil we put in, it wasn't until we got home it started pouring out, and the strange thing is, the oil was cold. as long as we stayed in mid revs and didn't use the turbo, it ran ok, if not the car started shuddering and then occasionally we'd hear the clanging noise from the exhaust. have spoken to a mechanic, who will take a look at tomorrow, but so stressed about it

Doesn't sound good. With a knackered turbo, I would have expected blue smoke and for the car not to have been emptied of its oil. Regrettably, driving it with no oil has most likely shagged it!
Chances are this is terminal I'm afraid.
Have a word with David at APi. If it is a matter of a rebuild get it done right the first time, don't just take the cheapest quote!

yep, kind of gathered it won't be cheap to be sorted. if engine is doomed then we are more inclined to have a new one put in then a rebuild, can't afford that kind of money.

Sounds like your going to need somebody who has a clue to physically look at the car...your not going to get a accurate diagnosis via proxy off a forum apart from that its fcuked.
