Hi Just gt myself a Z4 ECU and when i opened the lid i noticed that the j1 link has already been removed? is this normal?

There is also a socket already fitted with a chip plugged in.. im i right in thinking this is normal for the z4 ecu and its just the z4 map??

If anyone can enlighten me!! bit confused

theres no chip inside my z4 mate if that helps

 

you have a chipped z4 m8, the spare slot subaru provided is for this, when you fit the chip you cut the j1 resistor

 

A Z4 with J1 removed/cut will look for a chip in the socket so will need the J1 link refitted if you wish to use as is, be careful what chip is fitted as there are quite a few variants around now - The J1 link is not a resistor (just disguised as one) but just a 0 ohm link
If you fit a chip/adapter board it can be remapped

Also i have since installed one the ESL boards followed all of the instructions, done a ecu reset (all good no error codes) and iam a little disappointed or maybe its not running to its potential. I have varied my driving style travelled for around 30 miles on Optimax giving the ecu time to learn but it just dosent pull as i would expect for a chip running 1.1bar! I dont have a boost gauge to clarify what boost its running.... so i dont know what boost its actually running at..

My car is MY93 filter exhaust std downpipe!

do i give it more time to learn?

If you don't feel a significant difference you aren't making all the boost. First step is a boost gauge which tbh if you are playing with chips is essential. Let me know what it is actually boosting to and I can advise from there.

I have seen those type of numbers before but I can't recall where they came from.
If it's a Jap chip then it was probably running 1.1bar but with more timing then that provided by ESL. Which is where the risk is.....

If you ran the Z4 with this chip then reverted to the ESL Chip, the ESL chip may feel less powerfull due to the retarded timing and maybe a slighlty richer mixture, but it will be safer.

As Andy said you really need a boost gauge fitted. It's the 1st place to look when suspecting poor performance.

When I supply I take it as read that they have a boost gauge, but it still suprises me the amount of people that are running blind.

 

Dont no if it is of any help but iv got a similar sort of thing in my vesion 1 sti.

i bought a wagon ecu becasue it had a chip inside and had it remaped for my car and mods so yes you can if you get the right mapper

 

thats standard for a genuine STi 1, the STi RA has a similar ECU labelld SB. This also comes with the chip fitted from STi/Factory.
