Default Why is it called PRODRIVE?

My 94 wrx STI wagon which is a jap import has PRODRIVE on the reg docs! Not sure what this is all about as i'm under the impression that PRODRIVE was only available to UK cars?
If I'm correct why would someone bother to reg it as a PRODRIVE?

A classic jdm will have nothing to do with prodrive. A lot of imports are registered wrong. My version 5 is registered as a GL.
