MAF - curious
Evening all, my car is running absolutely fine but i was noticing a lot of people mention getting the MAF replaced on a regular basis.
Is this a good idea, to replace it every year - or to even just have one sat in the garage somewhere just incase?
Where would i be able to get one for a good price ( for a MY99 UK Turbo 2000 )?
Also what does it look like, where is it located in the engine bay and can it be fitted by a non-spanner monkey?
Thanks
Adam

Adam, people change there MAF regularly because the hotwire MAF is a little bit fragile, if you have an oil coated filter (K&N) then it is claimed that the oil may contaminate the MAF and leads to your engine running lean which will incur a melted piston.
The MAF is fitted on the air intake pipe and is easily changed, just follow the the intake pipe from the inner wing and you will see some wires coming out from the tube, its held on by 2 screws, that is your MAF. IIRC they are £70/80 ish from your local dealer, well worth changing periodically, rather than having engine rebuilds.

I've had mine since new 02 model, and she's been running with massive K&N filter with cold air kit for ages...all I do is spray electrical cleaner over it every now and then...works fine.

Might go for a run out tomorrow to find my local Subaru dealer in Northwich.
What do i ask for? Just a MAF for a MY99 or is it called something else more technical?
Do i also need to take my car with me ( i.e they need engine / chassic codes or something like that ) or can i go in my mates car if im passing?
Thanks

I just got a new MAF for my MY99 from an Irish Impreza specialist, cost about £80 (not impressed with my local dealer and the other is a bit far away for just one item (even such an important one)).
The full part number you're after from Subaru should be 2279AA010, rrp being £77.19 (apparently).
Hope that helps.
