Default 2.2 conversion

hi i have a my99 type r. i have just blown the big ends on the car. i was thinking of going for something like a sti9 engine for a swap, if the ecu in my car would run it, or a 2.2 conversion on my engine. has anyone hada 2.2 conversion and know what it costs? i have got about 3k to spare.

You won't go 2.2 for under 3K... Best off sticking with the 2litre if your on that budget...

or there is a bottom end for sale that will make 2.33 just need to pop your heads on. Think its going for about £1700 spend about the same again in labour changing heads and setting up ect and you have a very strong engine that will easily achieve over 400bhp reliably with supporting turbo etc

Sorry, but I beg to differ... most places don't rebuild a 2litre EJ20 lump for less than £2.5k, labour soon adds up, as its a massive clean up job when the bearings go......
A 2.2... (2.35) doesn't just stop there really does it?... bigger turbo, bigger injectors... re-map or different ECU (ie Gems, Motec )... uprated head gaskets... oils etc etc

I can send via PM a list of what I had for my EJ22t 2.35 build... and listings of costs if you want...? I still spent 6K plus... and my car already had Gems installed before the build...
And it was all DIY bar the short block come back from Ron @ AXIS in the USA...

It may be worth ringing, because that is what i heard from Mark recently. In other words a built short block for approx £3k, or less if you just buy parts.

I know what a 2.33 costs, and was amazed at how cheap the 2.2 would cost, in other words the same as what some were charging for a standard rebuilds.

It's worth a call, and perhaps getting a definitive answer.

I beg to differ too.. its not a masive clean up job after bearings go.. its a massive clean up job after boring the block!! Infact Just the same amount of cleaning!

Most places that rebuild engines for 2.5K are generally ripping you off unless they are uprating everything!!

For a decent price in parts speak to Tony Rigoli in Australia as he has many packages available. You would then have to find a decent engine builder. About two years ago it cost me about $6000 AUD for pistons, EJ25 crank, rods, oil & water pump , belts etc Not sure of the price now. Ring Tony or Sam.

With all parts required for the build and with labour and forgetting any extras, ECU, injectors, turbo etc it cost me around 3000 pounds.

Thats not a bad price back then, certainly cheaper than JUN.

My understanding is the parts can now be had for less than £2k plus vat, or approx £2500 plus vat as a built short block.

HKS pistons and crank nearly 4k alone, then con rods/boring out the block/shells/bearings etc - it's not cheap, but should be pretty solid when done.
