Default Cat 'C' and VOSA's etc

anyone ever done anything like this.. seen a cheapish runaround thats had a smack in the rear.. apparently due to it being 'cat C' it needs VIC checking dont really want to buy it just to chuck loads of money at to get it back on t'road
any advice would be greatly appreciated

Repair it... of a fashion... mot it... then go to you nearest DVLA office to tax it... as its cat c you shouldn't have the v5...(whatever its called now)
Hand over £18quid for applying for the doc's plus your tax fee...
Then basically drive it about... and wait for a form to come through saying it needs a VIC... that is £36quid which is just really a check to make sure it is the car it should be...
Once you've passed that you can apply for your £18quid doc fee...
Easy...
