Cabin filter on bugeye

Cabin filter on bugeye
Hi,
My 2001 WRX bugeye is fitted with the optional cabin filter. Just checked the filter and it is disgusting so I have removed it. Subaru dealer wants £50 for a new one though which seems very expensive. The dealer agreed and said just to run without it.
So I was wondering if the the optional filter is really an option or do all bugeyes have the filter box, but if you do not specify the filter when new do you just have an empty box. (Located on top of ventilation fan behind glove box).
