Question help? intermittent screeching noise

Can anyone advise me here on my 98 UK turbo. I have had an intermittent screeching noise which I thought was associated with braking. My first thought was that my brake pads needed changing and they did (very little pad left) so I have done the front ones. Then the noise was still there so I did the rears too. But every so often I hear the same screeching noise, normally when driving slowly in traffic and possibly when braking.

Any ideas what might cause this?

A friend wondered if the diff may have a problem and told me to check the gearbox oil. But the gearbox oil dipstick looked good with nice clean oil at the right level.

I should add that I did wonder if there was a wheel bearing issue but I have jacked up the car and tried to wobble the wheels and they are steadfast firm so I think that suggests the wheelbearings are okay.

if it happens when you rev you have a loose belt - a quick fix would be a spray of belt slip but you need to track down which belt it is to tension it back up again. Usual suspect is alternator or power steering pump
