not my big ends what could it be
there is a slight tapping coming from the bottom of my engine or at least thats where it sounds like its coming from i thought big ends might be going but apprently the engine wouldnt last long with that prblem and mine has been tapping for around since i got it, any ideas the car is a 93 wrx with 48000m

Ive got a 93 wrx with the same noise by the sound of it.

or could be cambelt tensioner..
you might stop the tappets ticking if you change to a better oil..
Motul 15W50 300v Competition for example..
Or is a fairly expensive job to change all the tappers (16 of them) as it is hard to know which one is ticking.
Piston slap is best described by doing a search rather than me retyping it all etc.. but basically the piston clearance is too great causing the piston to slap the bore.. usually only heard when the engine is cold unless very bad and you can ignore it pretty much.

Hi,
Maybe just a thought but I had a noise which sounded like maybe the big end's but I finally found out when my crank pulley almost came off losing the drive belt in the process .Just an idea but try checking the crank pulley bolt to see if it's tight (torqued correctly)
