Question Underbody cross brace?

There's a cross brace which is attached to teh underbody on each side just in front of the rear suspension assembly. I assume this brace increases body strength in some way, but I'm opene to other opinions.

Each of the bushes on mine seem to have a lot of play in them and was wondering if this is normal or they need replacing as the back end of mine is feeling a bit sloppy lately.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Ben

The 'brace' is no such thing.
It is the transverse beam of the rear diff carrier. There are 2 large rubber bushes in it so it should 'move' when prised with a large screwdriver (etc).

If this were loose then the rear end will move a touch, if the bolts have dropped out then serious (dangerous!!) movement will occure. (do not drive the car...)

If it is very loose, there will be a hard thumping at the back of the car when starting off/changing gear.

Cheers Graham

Yeah, it can thump a bit with the clutch judder when pulling away in anger, so it could be a bit too loose which could explain the slight sloppyness. It is still bolted in place by the way but isn't attache to the rear diff/drive system, just to each side of the underbody.

I've also just been out for a good hard run and the car is alot more sloppy than before. I've got AGX shocks, which are only a year old and still very hard on the hardest setting so they shouldn't be the problem, or could they be? Can the the rebound fail before the bound and vice-versa?

Doubt the dampers are knackered.
The cross beam MUST be bolted to the diff carrier! There are a lot of M8 bolts all over that assembly.

Nah, we must be talking about different bits Graham.

This bar goes over the half shaft and just bolts to either side of the underbody. I can't see anywhere else anything else could possibly be attached.
