Default Advice on White exhaust smoke ?

hey fellas
I have recently got a 94 wrx and since been busy with just the maintainence work. i need some advice on white exhaust smoke.

I have searched the previous posts about similar issues in the past and possibly assume that it is my turbo on its way out. But i will appreciate if anyone can shed some light in this case.

In the first start up of the day, there is white smoke accompanied by large amount of water drippin out from the exhaust. The white smoke fades for a bit but comes back whn i rev high. The smoke smell is more like wd40 then oil ..
I have a blitz blow off valve and i cannot even hear it right on revvin it high.
Took the intercooler off and there were traces of oil around the inner part of the intercooler which connects to the inlet manifold.
Can also hear a slight blow under the turbo (possibly the up-pipe on is knackerd.
The engine itself is ok ,, no missin/firing/ or funny knockin noises. but There is a slight whine which increases on revvin..

so Is there a recommended step guide to what i should check first and any advice and help on checking them will be gr8!

- turbo ?
- rocker cover gasket?
- headgasket ?
- or somethin more drastic

On start up that is condensation from the engine, the water is also condensation picked up from the exhaust.

The intercooler can get traces of oil in there also, thats common.

Is the white smoke still there after a long run out?
For head gasket problems you can just check your coolant pipes, they should be rock solid after running for a while, if they are not you may need to bleed the system, also check for any hydrocarbons in the coolant (oil).

the smoke only appears when i rev .. and its smoke with literally clear water . as if water would be sitting in somewhere along the backbox.

no traces of oil in the coolant and even checked for the mayo like substance near the turbo .. but its all clear.
ive checked all the turbo pipes and they are ok with no leaks .. but would the 'no sound of the bov' be a giveaway of the blown turbo or it could also be cuz of knackered up-pipe. ??

Can you feel a substantial loss of power when you put your foot down?

you would notice(hear it) if the up pipe was blowing that bad to have a major effect do you have a boost gauge fitted if so is the turbo producing any boost/ what boost pressure was you obtaining before you started having problems, does it feel like the turbo is working when you are driving?

car is on the jack now at my mates garage and hez helpin me out to do the work.

havent got a boost gauge installed, but the power loss is pretty obvious.
I can hear the bov while drivin - a very low and fainted sound.

Recently saw some slight smoke coming from under the turbo, but the nasty tractor sound suggests that its the knackerd uppipe

So Shall i change the turbo, or anyone reckons the power loss, the lost in the bov sound, the white smoke, the fainted whinning sound on revving could be caused by other means

I don't think problems with the turbo would produce white smoke. You will lose power if there is a blow in the exhaust, but there should still be noise from the dump valve. I would check all the boost pipes for leaks as it sounds like you could be losing boost somewhere. Would be a good idea to hook up a boost gauge, even if just temporarily, to see what boost is being produced.

what it could be making the smoke is the oil. as you said you had oil in the intercooler did you also have oil in the pipes? have you also got oil in breather pipes?
If so this can makes its way round when luanching fast etc through breather pipes back into air intake pipe then oil goes onto the turbo. as i have recently changed my breather system as not to go back to air intake pipe on advice of andy.f as he said this can happen and he's had a lot of turbos sent to him with white smoke where they think turbos f*cked but turned out its oil thats corsed it. or it could be your turbo is f*cked but best looking at other routes first

cheers swifty.
there were just a few traces of oil in the intercooler. nothing too serious and have been told by few other members that its pretty normal.
