last 2 days i have had " check engine" appear on dash...im worried sick by this.....i noticed that the fans come on all the time too??

i have checked everything,oil...and all other fluids....

the only thing i did by accident was put £10 of normal unleaded in the car...after realising this,i then topped it up with £20 of Optimax...

All you need to do is disconnect the battry for about an hour. THat resets the ECU, take it easy whilst driving for a hundred miles gradually building up levels of boost in each gear, did it in my car (my95 import) and it feels less boggy now I have the VTA DV

that will clear the code but if theres a fault with a sensor it will come back on, the fans running all the time are an indication the temp sensor is on the way out it's about £27 plus vat i think so get it changed.

did an ecu reset on my car today, under the dash drivers side there is a green plug(x2) and a single black one (x2),connect them both to each other with ign off, turn ign on,press throttle to floor, then up to half hold it for 2 secs, then release, start engine and drive gently until check engine flashes steadily, when it does, stop, turn car and ign off, disconect the two plugs again, ecu reset done,if it comes back you have a fault, post back and ill take you thru the check process, also the fans cut in and out every two or three seconds when mines in diagnostic mode(plugs connected up) and theres a fast clicking noise from the boost solenoid too(drivers front by air filter uinder bonnet, hope this helps

thanks all for your advice so far....think i may opt for disconnecting the battery for now and see how that works out....im almost positive now that it was the UL i put in which fooked it up...but why would the fans stay on from cold??

if your thermostat was goin it could give false readings so the ecu could think the car is very hot

im about to change my spark plugs cos i had an engine light after 1 month of ownership. when it flashes it suggests a misfire but when it went solid, it suggests the misfire has caused an exhaust system problem.

i have a 01 wrx - does the ecu reset thingy u describe earlier apply to my one too?

ta,
D

i would guess the exhaust prob is because you had a missfire unless it damaged the cat, have alook under drivers side dash for the plugs if they are there it should work.
