Default de catting up pipe

might sound like a stupid question but when you de cat the up pipe what happens to the sensor? i have just been informed(subaru fitter) that if you put it back in an un catted pipe it will melt and possibly break up.
anyone shed any light on this?

cheers

Lee

It's the EGT sensor in the up-pipe. It's possible that it can break and lunch the turbo and that's why some people remove it and fit a CEL fix and blank off the hole (search for EGT CEL fix)......most peoples preferred option

Mine died some time ago and I have decided to remove the OEM one and fit an aftermarket jobbie. Other people have run high power (ninnybobs) for a considerable time with no EGT issues using the standard EGT sensor.

All personal choice really

Cheers Shaun, again . would the car still run ok if i didnt re fit the sensor, and didnt fit a cel fix. would powerstation just map the light out? didn't think there was so much to think about.

Why they fit an EGT sensor to the Bugeye WRX beats me ! The STi doesn't have one and it's not really needed. The car with run fine without an EGT sensor as the ECU doesn't do anything about the input apart from to throw a CEL if it's not there or not working !!

Unfortunately the EGT CEL can't be EcuTeK mapped out

To keep the CEL away you have to have the OEM sensor in place or fit a 2K ohm resisitor between the terminals where the sensor plugs into the wiring loom at the top left hand engine bay near the boost solenoid !!

As mentioned it's all down to personal choice,

If you are running the original TD04 turbo then I doubt at the 265 - 280 BHP output the OEM EGT sensor will be troubled so it would be easier to keep it in situ as it's unlikely to fail.

Otherwise it's blanking off the hole in the up pipe and fitting the resistor !!

Shaun

PS if you are wondering why I'm having an EGT sensor fitted it's because I'm going for a touch of Methanol injection......methanol contains more oxygen that ambient air so the fuel burns at a higher temp....more power but there is a chance of melting the pistons !!

Thanks for that Shaun. probably easier to refit the sensor. anyway thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

Likewise thanks for taking the time to reply

Personally I'd simply refit the sensor and enjoy the increased performance

Melt, who told you that.

There is no change to the EGT.

The only reason it may break up is because in most cases the sensor is old and already weak, if it's a concern just change for a new one.

"Subaru Technician" told me , reckons with no protection it could melt/break up and destroy the turbo.

Subaru reckons the cat gubbins protects the sensor from heat/flames, and without this protection the sensor could break up/melt, his words not mine.

So the sensor is after the cat and not before it, is that right.

Even so, as for the heat, the hottest part of the exhaust is the cat, so surely that would reduce the temps.

Sorry to go on !!

Rob

Lee

2.5" for the exhaust will be fine

As mentioned, running the OEM EGT sensor is OK for the TD04.

Gussy broke his EGT sensor into bits runing 330 odd BHP and I have Killed a couple with my 350 plus BHP Bugeye

Most bigger power Newage WRX people ditch the OEM sensor.

Cheers
